Teaching procedure:
Step 1. Lead-in
1.Introduce a new friend----- show a picture of a parrot--- Polly.
2.Discuss 2 questions: How do you like Polly?
Guess what Polly can do?
Purpose--- Beautiful pictures and questions related can help Ss go into the topic quickly.
Step 2. Listening 1a
1.Pre- listening: Read lb, check what Polly can do.
2.While-listening: Finish 1b while listening the mp.3 player.
3.Post-listening: Listen again and check the answers.
Polly can --- speak English & sing the song Happy Birthday & count.
Purpose--- Listening with task can help Ss to get the main information better.

1.Watch the video of 1a, and read after it.
2.Vocabularies: ① smart: 聪明的 = clever. You are so smart/ clever! 你真聪明!
② So many 这么多,如此多的 (+可数名词的复数)so many children/ books
So much这么多,如此多的 (+不可数名词)so much noise
3.Grammar: model verb----can
List all the sentences with “can”, lead Ss to find the rules.
① Can----情感态动词, “能,会” I can swim.
②否定:can not 常常记作“can’t”. I can’t play the piano.
③过去:could not 常常记作“couldn’t ”. i couldn’t ride a bike when I was five.
④疑问:一般疑问句--- 把情态动词提到句首 Can you play soccer? Yes,I can./No, I can’t.
特殊疑问句--- 情态动词提到主语前面 What can I do for you?
Purpose--- Video can draw Ss’ interest.
And analysis of some key points can help them understand better.
Step 4.Practicing.
Complete the missing parts of the dialogue. The check the answers.
