【Analysis of the Teaching Material】
This set of textbooks Oxford English is published by Shanghai educational press. The contents of each textbook not only exploit the current knowledge and competence of language learners, but also provide them with diversified topics to motivate their interest in English, develop their comprehensive language competence, foster their learning strategies, cultivate their thinking abilities and arouse cultural awareness through meaningful and achievable activities. The basic rule is, learning through voice, or speak up myself to “learn”. As a result, learners acquire language knowledge and language competence by communication, negotiation and cooperation in order to use the target language appropriately in real-life situations.
The topics in these six textbooks are closely related to students’ daily life, covering Chinese and English cultures. The topic of Unit 1 (Book 7a) is no exception. It is about my life. After learning this unit, students are supposed to be able to describe their life and their friends. Through this topic, students should be guided to have social responsibilities and be a good friend. According to the English Curriculum Standard, students are required to be able to speak on a particular topic and revise it under the guidance of teachers.
Last but not the least, speaking-part talks about pronunciation and myself, which lays the foundation for reading activities.
【Analysis of the Students】
There are 48 students in the class. Generally speaking, the students’ English level varies, but mostly at initial level.
In terms of thinking abilities, the students in Grade 7 are very active and most of them are interested in learning English. They are willing to cooperate with the teacher and their partners to create a favorable teaching and learning atmosphere. The topic of this unit is about making friends. Students are familiar with this topic and they are supposed to be willing to express opinions because they have interest and have many sentences to speak out. Students will be enabled to describe myself by reviewing and analyzing the learning material.
In terms of language competence, students have already acquired some language knowledge and have formed some learning habits, although they are limited to some extent. They have known some basic speaking requirements and mastered some speaking strategies. However, some of them are not good at speaking appropriately on a particular topic. So games and tongue twister activities are applied to help students to practice.
What’s more, the students have already learned Reading and Listening. They have learned some phrases and expressions about introducing themselves, so, they are supposed to be able to voice their ideas about making friends and practice the voice. However, they may lack verified language to express themselves.
Finally, some students may make some confusion when they are practice. So, practicing voice may help them differences between the special monophthong /i/and /i:/ 、/e/and / ?/ and have the awareness of the words with these voices when talking about themselves..
