It must/could/might/can’t belong to Mary. Difficulties How to practice talking about the conversation about persons and their things by using “must, might, could, can’t”.

Vocabulary Whose, truck, picnic, rabbit, attend, valuable, pink, anybody at the picnic, belong to, the only kid Period 1 Procedure Lead-in 1. Show learning aims to the students.

2. A guessing game.

Ask “Do you know who he is?” Students can answer it by using “could/must/can’t” Step 1 Show some more pictures. Guess what the pictures show. Step 2 Activity 1a.

Ask Ss to look at the picture and find the things they can see. Step 3 Activity 1b.

Let Ss to listen and match each person with a thing and a reason. Step 4 Pair work.

Ask Ss to practice making conversations.

E.g.:

A: Whose … is it?

B: It must/might be ... Step 5 Activity 2a.

Listen and write down the things in the schoolbag. Step 6 Activity 2b.

Listen again and fill in the blanks. Step 7 Brainstorm.

Use “must” to show that you think something is probably true.

Use “might” or “could” to show that you think something is possibly true.

Use “can’t” to show that you are almost sure something is not true. Step 8 Show Ss the knowledge about the modal verbs. Step 9 Exercises about the modal verbs, Step 10 Group work-show time

Each group prepares a bag including different things. Change it. Then guess “Whose things are they? And why? ”. They must use “must, could, might, can’t.” Step 11 Sum up what we have learnt today.
