Ability Objectives:

● to develop students’ ability to use participles as adverbials properly.

Emotional Objectives:

● to encourage students to express their feelings by using participles.

Teaching Procedures:

Lead-in

A student retells Unit 4 “the hamburger business” to help review the text. And at the same time, list four sentences containing past participles used as adverbials.

Presentation and Practice

Review these four sentences and explain past participle used as adverbials of reason, condition, time and concession. And introduce to students past participle used as adverbials of manner or attending circumstances.

☆ Combine two sentences by using past participle.

Explain the differences between past participle and present participle used as adverbials.

Fill in the blanks by using the correct verb form.

Give instructions on three notes.

We can put some conjunctions before participles to make the meaning of the sentence much clearer.

☆ translate three sentences into English.

Learn some fixed usages.

☆ list some phrases that don’t agree with the rules

The understood subject (逻辑主语) of participles is always the subject of the main sentence.

☆ complete a short passage with the correct verb form.

III. Consolidation

Show students a video. Then students are assigned to discuss in groups of four and then to express their feelings about this video by using participles as adverbials.
