To help students appreciate the description of the character Lady Bracknell in a play.
Teaching procedures
I. Pre-reading Stage (5 minutes)
Review the background knowledge and basic character relationship in the play.
II. While-reading Stage (30 minutes)
Analyze Lady Bracknell’s questions
Let students scan the extract and answer the following questions.
(1). How many questions does Lady Bracknell ask?
(2). What are these questions? Why does she ask these questions?
Guide students to think why Lady Braknell doesn’t ask questions like “do you love my daughter” or “will you guarantee that you’ll make my daughter happy?”
Analyze Lady Bracknell’s Responses
2.1. Read lines 2-6 and answer the following questions.
What does Lady Bracknell say after her daughter’s happy announcement of her engagement? What kind of person can you judge Lady Bracknell is?
Ask students to act Lady Bracknell and read the lines, reminding them to pay attention to her tone (happy, angry, calm, or decisive?) and then let students appreciate the film clipping.
2.2. Scan lines 8-19 and complete the following tasks.
(1). Underline Lady Bracknell’s responses to Jack’s respective answers up till now.
(2). Fill in the following blanks by drawing emojis to show LadyBracknell’s emotional reaction.
