1. Ss will be able to understand what kind of persons Sue, Johnsy and Behrman are.

2. Ss will be able to know about the ways O. Henry used in characterizing the three characters.

Ability objectives:

Ss will be able to strengthen their ability to analyze characters through analyzing their actions, lines and appearance

Emotion objective:

Ss will be able to admire Behrman’s spirit of sacrifice.

Teaching focus:

1. To guide Ss to make character analyses to have a deeper understanding of the three characters.

2. To familiarize Ss with different ways O. Henry used in characterizing the three characters.

Teaching difficulties:

To help Ss understand what kind of persons the three characters are through analyzing their actions, lines and appearance.

Teaching aids: blackboard, multi-media

Teaching procedures and activities:

I. Pre-task

1. Ask Ss to recall the characters in the story and clarify the relationship among them.

II. While-task

1. Character analysis – Johnsy

① Ask Ss to choose proper adjective(s) to judge what kind of person she is.

② Ask Ss to scan the whole story to find out the descriptions that support their ideas.

③ Show Ss some sentences from the story and ask them to clarify her change.

2. Character analysis – Behrman

① Ask Ss to read certain paragraphs and choose proper adjective(s) to judge what kind of person he is.

② Ask Ss to find out more descriptions about him guide them to imagine the situation of his painting the last leaf.

③ Guide Ss to conclude what kind of person he is on the basis of the descriptions in the story and their imagination of the plot.
