Step 1. Lead in
Explain to the students how a verb phrasal can be formed with the help of the following sentences.
When the teacher came in , we were reading English.
(In this sentence, in is an adverb.)
When the teacher came into the classroom, we were reading English.
(In this sentence, into is a preposition.)
She went aboard the plane half an hour ago.
(In this sentence, aboard is a preposition.)
Combustible goods are not allowed to be taken abroad .
(In this sentence, abroad is an adverb.)
Point out that in the above sentences, an adverb or a preposition is used after a verb to make up a phrasal verb.
Step 2. Some rules we should pay attention to.
In a phrasal verb, the adverb can go before or after the object.
Fleming tried out this mould on another bacterium.

2. A phrasal verb does not always have an object.
The sports meeting will have to be put off due to the bad weather.
The big fire didn’t go out until the firemen came.
3. In a phrasal verb with a preposition, the object of the preposition always comes after it.

I have no choice but to look after her little baby.
4. Sometimes we can add a preposition after the adverb in a phrasal verb.
To be frank, I can hardly put up with his boring speech.
5. Often, phrasal verbs have special meanings.
I tried to persuade him to give up smoking, but I failed.( Stop doing sth.
