Teaching important and difficult points：
Guide Ss to grasp some religious words that are now often used in everyday English without a religious meaning.
Procedures:
Step1 Lead-in
Guessing game: Show Ss some pictures of the symbols of the most popular religions around the world, and guide them to speak out: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Step2 Religions
Read the article Religions around the world in Part A on page 54, and answer the following questions.
What religions are mentioned in the passage?
What religious book do Jews read?
When did Islam begin? Where do Muslims worship?
Read the article again and finish the following table:

Buddhists

Step3 Consolidation
Show Ss some pictures of the above five religions and encourage them to speak out relevant items aloud (group competition preferred).
Step4 Religious words
Ask Ss to read three pairs of sentences including religious words like angel, devil and soul, differentiating between their religious and non-religious meaning.
Finish Part B on page 55 with the three religious words: angel, devil and soul.
Lead in religious words such as paradise, idolise, faith, pray, worship, Mecca, shrine etc. learned in Reading.
Step5 Discussion and presentation
Divide the whole class into five groups, and each group can choose 1-2 above-mentioned religious words to make a sentence or sentences, illustrating their usage in daily English.
