Teaching procedures:
Step1: color idioms in English
watch a short video about color idioms in English and know the meanings of them
(This part not only helps students to review color idioms learnt in Word Power and know they can express personal emotions or characters in English, but also arouses students interests in exploring colors used to express qualities in Beijing Opera masks.)
Step 2: Colors used in Beijing opera masks
1. Read the article in part C , and fill in the table
(This is for students to have a deep understanding of the colors describing different personalities on the masks and prepare for the design of a mask.)
Step 3: Design a mask for a Beijing opera based on a western
story—group work
1. get to know the characters of a western story
2. choose one of the roles
3. decide the colors on the mask and give the reasons for your choice
4. paint the mask
5. present their designs
(This step is designed to integrate students’ skills in listening, speaking and writing through teamwork. Students understand adjectives describing characteristics and accordingly choose proper colors. Their ability to use words in the correct order to describe their designs can be cultivated through presentation.)
Step4: Writing
Watch a short video about Experimental Peking opera “Faust” also based on a western
story.
