《爱丽丝梦游仙境》作者卡洛尔自幼极富想象力,性格内向、终生未婚,却非常热爱儿童,常与儿童共同游戏。1862年的一个夏日,卡洛尔带邻居的三位女儿泛舟于泰晤士河上,在河岸小憩喝茶时,他给孩子们编了一个奇境记故事,主人公便是以姐妹中最伶俐可爱的七岁小爱丽丝为模特的。回家后,卡洛尔应爱丽丝请求把故事写下来并亲自作插图,送给了小爱丽丝。不久小说家亨利·金斯莱发现了书稿,拍案叫绝,在他的鼓励下,卡洛尔进一步加以润色,以《爱丽丝梦游仙境》为题,于1865年正式出版。1871年,卡洛尔又出版了这部童话的姊妹篇《爱丽丝镜中奇遇记》。
