Transitions
between
are the bridges that allow a
reader to move from one idea
to the next without getting
lost in the language. In writing,
a transition is a word, phrase
or sentence.
Transitions
What is a transition?
Why do we need transitions?
Dad and I went fishing.
Mum made our lunch.
Please connect the sentences by adding transitional words.
Dad and I went fishing. / Meanwhile / Mum made our lunch.
After / Dad and I went fishing, / Mum made our lunch.
Before / Dad and I went fishing, / Mum made our lunch.
Dad and I went fishing / after / Mum made our lunch.
While / Dad and I went fishing, / Mum made our lunch.
Different transition words change the meaning of the sentences by changing the sequence (order) of events.
Transitions link sentences and
paragraphs together smoothly
so that there are no sudden jumps
or breaks between ideas.
Without them, the relationship between
ideas may be unclear to the reader. Too many transitions can cause as much confusion as too few.
