The Paralympic Games
The Paralympic Games (残奥会) are an international sports competition for athletes with physical disabilities. These disabilities include a loss of eyesight or hearing, leg length difference and so on. The event provides the disabled people with a chance to show their skills to the world. The Paralympic Games include many events similar to those in the the Olympics. The first athlete to do so was German-American George Eyser in 1904. He had one man-made leg. To him, the most important thing is not to come first, but to take part. It was very brave of him to join the competition.
The first official Paralympic Games were held in Rome in 1960. At that time, it was not just open to war soldiers, 400 athletes from 23 countries took part in the 1960 Games.
Since then, the Paralympic Games have taken place in the same year as the Olympic Games every two years: Summer and Winter Games.
