Origin

The Duanwu Festival is believed to have originated in ancient China. A number of theories exist about its origins as a number of folk traditions and explanatory myths are connected to its observance.

The best known of these relates to the suicide in 278 BCE of Qu Yuan, poet and statesman of the Chu kingdom during the Warring States period.

Qu Yuan ( 340 BCE – 278 BCE) A descendant (后裔)of the Chu royal house, Qu served in high offices. However, when the king decided to ally with the increasingly powerful state of Qin, Qu was banished for opposing the alliance . 28 years later, Qin conquered the capital of Chu. In despair, Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month

Cao E’s father was drowned. In an act of filial piety(孝心), She searched for three days trying to find him. Five days later, both of them were found dead by the river. In 151 CE(东汉), a temple was built dedicated to memory Cao E and her sacrifice for filial piety. To this day, a tributary(支流) of the Qiantang River is named after Cao E.(曹娥江)

Dragon boats are generally decorated with Chinese dragon heads and tails, which has the history over 2000 years in southern China.

A typical dragon boat ranges from 50-100 feet in length, with a beam of about 5.5 feet, accommodating two paddlers seated side by side.

The standard crew complement of a contemporary dragon boat is typically 22. comprising 20 paddlers in pairs, 1 drummer and 1 sweep (a steerer)

The pulsation of the drum beats produced by the drummer may be considered the “heartbeat” of the dragon boat . The drummer leads the paddlers throughout a race using the rhythmic drum beat to indicate the frequency and synchronicity(同步) of all the paddlers' strokes

Drummer

The leading pair of paddlers, called "pacers," "strokes" or "timers," set the pace for the team. It is critical that all paddlers are synchronised .

Sweep/steersman

The sweep controls the dragon boat with a sweep oar rigged at the rear of the boat, generally on the side and off centre, which is used both for ruddering as well as for sweeping the stern sidewards

After you’ve worked up an appetite, you can eat Zongzi. Everyone eats them during the Dragon Boat Festival.
