William Butler Yeats (13 June 1865?– 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and dramatist, and one of the most influential figures of 20th century literature.
Introduction of William Butler Yeats
In December 1923, Yeats was awarded
the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Background of the Poem
This poem was written in 1893 by William Bulter Yeats during his uncertain relationship with Maud Gonne. The poet proposed to Maud Gonne four times(1891,1899,1900,1901)
but he was refused each time. Yeats’ love was unrequired, in part due to his reluctance to participate in her nationalist activism(民族主义运动).
Background of the Poem
So Yeats wrote this poem to imagine she could realize that he was the one who would love her forever and love her soul unconditionally as she grew old, when the woman read this poem by chance many years later. At that time, she would regret her missed opportunity of true love.
