TV Review – the Underground Railroad

1. Which aspects does a film/TV review usually cover?

Part 1: A brief introduction of the film/TV programme (including the title, the director, main actors/actresses, etc.)

Part 2: An outline of the film/TV programme

The plot(s) impressing you most and the reasons behind it

Part 3: A summary (the writer's comments, etc.)

2. What might the Underground Railroad be about?

The Underground Railroad was the name given to a system that helped slaves from the American South escape to the safety of the North and Canada.

Scan the passage and find out what the Underground Railroad really is.

Summarize the main idea of each paragraph.

paragraph 1

the writer's general opinion of the programme/ the reason why the writer writes about the programme

paragraph 2

what the programme is about

/ the main plot

paragraph 3

more information about the programme, especially the heroines

paragraph 4

reasons why the writer is so impressed with the programme / the writer's comments on the programme

Read again and find out what the writer wants to show with the following sentences.

1. Sadly, I can count on the fingers of one hand the programmes that have really stimulated me in the last six months.

2. Helping a runaway slave was an extremely brave thing to do, as the helpers knew that they would be cruelly punished if they were caught.

3. But what made the programme really special were the imaginary scenes with the slaves and their helpers. The scenes were completely believable and the acting was superb.
