① As we all know, French ruled England for quite a number of years. Words, like restaurant, dentist, ballet, government and judge, could influence English.
②Arabic provided English with words for things that could be traded including spices, coffee and alcohol. It also provides Arabic numbers, such as zero, one, two and so on.
③English borrowed Italian words linked to music and the arts, for example, colonel, opera, confetti , balcony, piano and violin.
④From German, English got many words for tools, snacks and geological terms, such as clock, hamburger and monsoon. The most well-known German borrowing is Nazi.
⑤The Greek element also entered English language in the form of suffix. For example: tragedy, comedy, theory, thesis, basis.
⑥Chinese has contributed to English words. The early Chinese borrowing are: feng-shui, chopsticks, tofu, lama, sofa and cheongsam.
