When do we use unreal conditionals?
Three sentence structures.
Observe the following sentences and tell whether they are real or unreal conditional clauses.
If Donald Trump goes against international trade rules, a trade war will kill millions of U.S. jobs.
If I were Donald Trump, I wouldn't do anything that harms both America and China.
(I am not Donald Trump)
Unreal conditionals state a condition or situation that is not real or is imaginary.
We can use unreal conditionals to refer to
l.an unreal present condition,
2.an imaginary past action,
3.an imaginary future situation.
If I had ten million yuan, I would buy a villa [v?l?] (别墅).
Do I have ten million yuan? No.
Therefore, I still have no villa now.
If I were a bird, I could fly.
If I had wings, I could fly.
Do I have wings? No.
Therefore, I can not fly now.
