The opera,Turandot, is set in the Forbidden City. The story takes on a classic love triangle between Turandot, Calaf and Liu.
In the beginning, Turandot wants to avoid marriage, saying that the potential husband will be condemned to death unless he can solve three riddles. Calaf falls in love with her at first sight and manages to answer the riddles. However, Turandot resists marrying him. Then, Calaf promises not to marry her if Turandot can tell his name by sunrise. So, she demands that Calaf’s father and Liu should tell her his name. But Liu refuses and kills herself. At the end of the story, the prince and princess unite in marriage.
