In 1620, the settlers, also known as Pilgrims(清教徒) , sailed to America on the Mayflower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship.?In the icy weather of November, after a tempestuous two-month voyage ,they landed in Massachusetts. Their first winter in the New World was tough because of the freezing coldness, which made them suffered a lot. When the following spring came, only 50 people stayed alive. The Indians taught them how to work the earth and plant corn, beans, pumpkins, and other crops. In the autumn of 1621, corn, barley(大麦), beans and pumpkins were harvested. To thank God and Indian friends, the pilgrims hold a celebration every year. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November as a national holiday of Thanksgiving. Finally in 1941, the congress declared that the holiday would be celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday in November. Then Thanksgiving Day came into being.
