What is cinquain?
Cinquain is from a French word "cinq", which means "five".
It is made up of five lines.
It conveys a strong picture in just a few words.
Traditional cinquain
An American poet named Adelaide Crapsey (1878–1914) who inspired by Japanese haiku, created a simple form of cinquain. It consists of 22 syllables and there are 2-4-6-8-2 syllables in each line. This is called traditional cinquain. For example:
These be
Three silent things
The falling snow the hour
Before the dawn the mouth of one
Just dead.
Modern cinquain
Later, someone developed a simpler form of cinquain, which is
called modern cinquain.
Brother
Beautiful, athletic
Teasing, shouting, laughing
Friend and enemy too
Mine
Summer
Sleepy, salty
