Today we are going to read a detective story written by Arthur Conan Doyle. The Mystery of the Red-headed Club.

How many characters and who are they?

What’s the relationship between them?

T: At the beginning of the story, Mr Wilson is telling Dr Watson a story.

Who are in the story?

And any information you know about him in the passage?

He became the member of the club

Still remember an important element is the setting. So can you tell me where is Wilson’s greengrocery and where he works later.

We know the plot consists of start, development, climax or an ending. If you were Mr Wilson, could you help to tell me, Dr Watson, the story?

Which part of the story is the climax, as you think?

And give us the reason.

How does Dr Watson feel about the story?

Referring to the plot you can see it is clearly presented, consisting of clues, such as…. But it leaves you with doubts, and then your inferences, such as He is a red-headed but it is such a coincidence that he is the one being chosen!

Now if you were Holmes or Watson, what clues you find are doubtful? Write on the piece of paper the clues and then explain to us about your doubts.

As a Holmes fan, you know that once Conan Doyle said “There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact!” So according to the clues, what may happen in the story next?

What literary techniques have been employed to create the mystery?

Now I’d like to divide you into two groups and discuss about the question in 3 minutes.

Sharing time!

Homework!

In this class, you are to

Analyze the collected information to figure out the plot what happened to Mr Wilson in this first part;

Inquire the relationships among content, language and significance by relating facts to inferences about the mystery of the club;
