Johnsy has fallen ill and is dying of pneumonia(肺炎）. She watches the leaves falling from the window of her room, and decides that when the last leaf drops, she will die, too. To encourage her, Her neighbor ,a poor old artist also tortured(折磨） by pneumonia ,painted the last leaf on a stormy night .

Inspired by the last leaf, Johnsy decided not to give up hope and survived but the old artist died shortly after he finished that painting.
