You will get a handout like this, please discuss with your partner and think of words to describe the main characters. Please give evidence by quoting sentences from the story.
Here is a list of characteristic words to describe the characters. Decide with your partner and give reasons.
What are the features for the king? Which are the descriptions for the princess? How about the young man?
Although we’ve both got many features for the king and the princess, which character is more stereotyped? And which has more shades?
If a character seems very simple, or can be summed up with only one or two traits, then this is a flat character. Otherwise, if a character has many different and sometimes even contradictory character traits, it is a round character. It is complex, dynamic or many sided.
If the character is doing or saying sth surpring, who would it be?
The entire story is based on conflicts
What are the conflicts the kings is facing?
What conflicts is the princess facing?
There are 2 types of conflict. The first, external conflict, involves a person’s struggle against an outside force, such as another person, nature, or even the society in which he or she lives. Internal conflict involves an emotional or psychological struggle within a person’s mind. In this type of conflict, an individual is divided by two opposing ideas or feelings.
―the conflicting nature in the king, the conflict of emotions in the princess who has to take a decision, and the doors depicting conflicts of life and death.
Most stories are constructed in this plot structure. Can you decide for the events that happened in each phase of the structure?
