Everyone has to make some important choices in their life. In the story, a young man must make a very important choice. It is truly a life or death decision. What's the Choice?
Step 1: Fast reading:
Step 2: Read the story and answer the following questions:
1.How many characters are there in the story? Who are they?
2.How did the king do with the criminals?
3.What was behind one of the doors in the king’s arena? What was behind the other door?
4.Why was the king’s arena so popular with the people?
5.With whom did the princess fall in love?
6.Who was the lady behind the door?
Step 3: Deep understanding of the characters and language.
1) Flat and round characters
Depending on how much information is given by the author, characters can be either flat or round. Flat characters seem very simple, as if they could be summed up with only one or two character traits(性格特征). On the other hand, round characters have many different and sometimes even contradictory(矛盾的) character traits. Because they are
many-sided(多面的), round characters are capable of doing and saying surprising things.
Question 1: Is the king a flat or round character? Support your answer with details from the story.
Question 2: Is the princess a flat or round character? Support your answer with details from the story.
Question 3: Is the slave a flat or round character? Support your answer with details from the story.
2) Dilemma
A dilemma is a situation in which a person must choose between equal choices. There is no objective way to determine if one choice is better than the other. Most often, the word “dilemma” is used when referring to situations in which both alternatives are equally unpleasant. For example, in “The Lady or the Tiger?”, the princess is faced with a
dilemma—either choice she makes will have an unpleasant consequence. Now, fill in the blanks to describe the dilemma the princess faces:
If she directs her lover to the tiger, ______________________________
If she directs her lover to the lady, ______________________________
Therefore, both consequences are equally painful to her---she is really facing a dilemma.
3) Language appreciation:
(1) Behind one of the doors was a hungry tiger, the most cruel that could be found.
(2) She was as perfect a match for him as could be found in the land.
