在巴黎以外的地方，应邀参加别人家里举行的宴会是比较常见的。在接到类似邀请的时候，一定要接受，并且比事先约定的时间晚十五分钟左右到达。给女主人选择礼物时需要注意，如果送花，花的数目应该是单数（但是不能是十三支！），不要带菊花（除非参加葬礼），不要带红玫瑰（大家会猜想你和女主人有不正当的关系），也不要带黄颜色的花（这表明主人与其他人有不正当的关系）。把酒作为礼物也不太好。带一瓶普通的廉价葡萄酒只会降低你自己的身份。但如果带一瓶高级的酒的话，又会被人认为带有嘲笑主人藏酒不够的意味。

因此，最好的解决办法是带一盒你所能买到的最好的巧克力作为礼物。等到主人邀请你进门之后你再进去。等到主人提出之后，男士们才可以脱去外套。等主人开始用餐的时候，客人们才能开始进餐。如果你习惯于把手放在膝盖上的话，在这里千万不要这样。因为别人会相互询问你把手放在桌子底下干些什么。吃沙拉的时候，不要用刀切生菜，而是用你的餐叉把它折叠成小块。用刀把水果皮去掉，用餐叉来吃。用两份干酪是不礼貌的，尤其不要把干酪切成小片。
