Let’s start with statement one. The idea of equal rights means black people should have the same rights as white people do. They should have平等的权利。I think you know this statement is about King, for it’s talking about the fight in the US…independence is a long word. But you must know depend—dependence—independence so it means not depending on anything or anyone, which means 独立 in Chinese. From British rule. What does rule mean here? We are familiar with its meaning of 规则,but from the context, we all know it’s not right here. Here rule means government. So the sentence means 他带领他的国家从英国统治走向了独立。This sentence is for Gandhi. He led India to independence from British rule.
那些你做的,去公开表达你认为有些事儿不对或不公平的事情, in Chinese, it could be translated into 抗议
Peaceful means not violent,和平的,非暴力的, so peaceful protest means非暴力的抗议活动。
也就是“因种族引起的不公正的对待”,种族歧视。Racial is the adj. form of race. This statement is true for both Gandhi and King. Some of you may get confused. Yes, you are right, neither of them is South African. But both of then suffered racial discrimination there. As a young man, King practiced law in South Africa. And at that time he faced much racial discrimination, because he is black people. As for Gandhi, he faced the discrimination directed at India in South Africa and was thrown off a train when he refused to move to the 3rd class area from the 1st class area. But he actually had a 1st class ticket. So they both had the experience of racial discrimination in South Africa.
This is obvious for king. Everyone knows his speech “I have a dream”. In this sentence, inspiring means…鼓舞人心的,激励的,from the verb inspire.
Bars means…封住门窗的金属棍或木棍, if so, what’s the meaning of behind bars. To make it clearer, let’s see a picture. You see the bars in the picture? This man is behind bars. Now do you get the meaning of behind bars? Right. It means in prison. So he was put behind bars means he was put in prison.
Justice公正
Gandhi didn’t win Nobel peace prize. But he was nominated, 提名 for 5 times. That is an achievement and a special honor too.
Now, let’s have a summary of Gandhi and King’s life experience. Let’s start with Gandhi.

Before we actually start to listen to the conversation, let me give you some tips.
Tip number one, search for key words. Our goal is to find out the exact year in which these events happen. So the key words should be the key words of the events. Like for event A, the key words should be march to Washington D.C.. For event B, the key words should be bus protest and so on. When we hear these key words we should be really focused. The time words before or after it should tell us the answers we need.
Tip number two, look for words related to order and sequence. When listening, pay attention to words related to order and sequence, like first, after, the next year, later, in the end and so on.
