You can have a look and take some notes.
Well, marathons have been so popular not only in the West, but also in China. Now you can find the evidence in a bar chart about the Marathon participants in China, which is taken from Task1 on Page 32 in our textbook. Maybe you will have some difficulty reading charts and I will give you some guidance. ※
Let’s look at “Learning to learn”. Charts and graphs are useful tools to collect facts and figures. And this chart is a bar chart. Bar charts are used to show how something changes over time, or used to compare data. It’s important to read its title and the labels along the vertical and horizontal sides. So this bar chart shows us the change of the number of Marathon participants in China over years from 2012 to 2016, with the number rising from 500,000 to 2800,000. Do you agree?
So now, with the facts and figures collected about Marathon participants in China, let’s try to answer some questions. ※
1. What key information is shown in this chart? ※Yes, the number of Marathon participants in China is increasing. ※
2. What reasons lie behind the phenomenon? I can still offer you some hints. What about people’s healthier lifestyle? Are there any relationship between people’s physical fitness and Marathon? ※Then, what about a quick economic growth? Can it be stimulated by Marathon and thus promote the development of the sports industry? ※
Anyway, long-distance running has become a fashion.
And today, we’ll read several stories of some runners. Now please, take a look at the form of this text and try to tell the type of writing. ※ Well, the form here refers to the page design, such as the menu bar, the background playground, the arrangement of the short stories, and you may even take a look at the lead, the introduction. Yes, soon you will find that it’s a webpage, which is taken from a global site for runners to share their stories about running. This type of writing for some practical communicating purpose is called practical writing, ※ such as forum articles you learnt in module 1, Unit2 Exploring English, Misadventures in English, right? And also, the letters we read and write are practical writings. ※
Then, let’s focus on the title of this text, Running into a Better Life. Can you guess the meaning of it? Yes, running can bring us a happy life. It can bring a lot of benefits to us, both physically and mentally. It can improve our physical condition, bring us a lot of confidence, help us make new friends and reduce stress from work. So, in this text, we will understand the benefits and power of running better, right?
Still, ※can you predict the structure of the telling of these stories? If it’s necessary, you can take a quick look at the stories. ※Great, to tell their stories, almost all the runners follow a structure of reasons for starting running and benefits gained from running.
Let’s read these stories carefully. First of all, story from Li Yue, 16, Beijing. Let’s read it together. “I was born with asthma and I never thought I’d be a runner! I only joined my local athletics club because my doctor told me that in my particular case exercise could improve how my lungs work. But before I knew it, I was taking part in local races. As my fitness and my running improved, I started running in national competitions. This year I won silver in the under 18’s 10,000 metres! And who knows, next year I could win gold!”
Ok, while you are reading, you might have noticed some key words, such as “was born with, joined, taking part in”. They’re all useful expressions. Here, if someone was born with?a particular disease, problem, or characteristic, they have it from the time they were born. For example, Lily was born with weak eyesight. Then, you must have noticed some difference between join and take part in. We can join somebody or an organization, or even join in an activity mainly to amuse ourselves. For example, she joined the music club to relax. We can take part in an activity, not to get amused but to play a part. For example, would you take part in the discussion and give us some suggestions?
Well, so much for the language, let’s focus on what information you’ve collected. There’re some key sentences that offer us some important details or function as an important transition. What can you learn from these sentences? ※Yes, Li Yue joined his local athletics club to improve his condition but in return he not only gained health but also honor. So, running has helped to make his life better.
Now let’s fill in a table about him, including reasons for starting running and benefits gained from running.
Let’s check the answers. ※As for reasons or starting running: running could improve how his lungs work and help him treat his asthma. ※ As for benefits gained from running: running improved his fitness and led him to achieve things he never thought he could do. I’m sure you will do a good job.
Now let’s move on, a story from Sarah, 36, Montreal. Let’s read it together. “Not so long ago, I didn’t do my exercise – not even any jogging! Then I discovered an app called Running Power. It lists your performance against other runners in your social network. At first, I kept running just to see my name in the top five.”
Ok, while you are reading, you might have noticed some key words, such as “lists”. Generally, list is a noun, we hear about shopping lists, right? But here, it’s a verb, which means making lists. I can give you an example. For example, you may list all your New Year wishes and keep working hard.
Now let’s move on to another paragraph about her running story. “Soon, I found that I was not alone – I came across other runners in the same area running for the same purpose! Now I no longer use the app, but I’ve fallen in love with running, and still do it with my running friends.”
And there’s another key phrase, “came across”. As for “came across”, coming across someone means meeting someone by chance, usually a romantic and enlightened meeting.
Well, so much for the language, let’s focus on what information you’ve collected. There’re some key sentences that offer us some important details or function as an important transition. ※※Yes, “Then I discovered an app called Running Power.” What else?
Yes, ※※※ “Now I no longer use the app, but I’ve fallen in love with running, and still do it with my running friends.” What can you learn from these sentences? Yes, Sarah started running because of a sports app and ended up falling in love with running and making some running friends by the way.
Now let’s fill in a table about her, including reasons for starting running and benefits gained from running.
Let’s check the answer. ※As for reasons for starting running: She discovered an app that lists people’s performance and she wanted to see her name in the top five. ※As for benefits gained from running: She came across other runners in the same area and fell in love with running. I’m sure you will do a good job.
Now let’s continue to read a story from David, 52, New York. Let’s read it together. “As a computer engineer, there’s always a new challenge around the corner! It can be quite stressful at times, though, which I turn makes me feel anxious. To help deal with this, I go running as often as I possibly can.”
Now let’s move on to another paragraph about his running story. “Whether I’m at the gym or on the road, my nervous energy pushes me through mile one. By mile two, the tension has moved from my mind to my legs. By the end of the run, all my stress has disappeared and I’m ready to face the next day at work!”
