The “Flying Fish” — Michael Phelps

In China he’s known as “the Flying Fish”; in America they call him “the Baltimore Bullet”(巴尔的摩子弹).

Whatever you call him, American swimmer Michael Phelps becomes famous across the world after breaking the Olympic record for eight gold medals in Beijing.

Now people are already calling him the greatest Olympian of all time. Bu t whether he is or not, what makes Michael Phelps so good?

A good place to start might be his body shape. Phelps has the perfect body shape for a swimmer: his arms are longer than his height. He has very flexible joints (关节), huge lungs (肺), and his unbelie vable large feet (size 14 in the US, size 49 in China).

To feed his huge swimmer’s body, Phelps eats an astonishing 12,000 calories (卡路里) a day, six times for a man of his age. After a huge breakfast, he then slips into a swimsuit which has been making waves in the world of swimming. The suit is made of a special material which is said to help athletes swim 2% faster.

Michael Phelps should be thankful to his mom. His mom first pushed him into swimming as a way of making friends. And she believed in him when one teacher said he would never be a success.

Whatever the reason for his success, Phelps agrees there was perhaps also a bit of luck involving in winning his eight medals.

“I guess eight is a lucky number for me, too, now. The opening ceremony started on 8/8/08. Maybe it was meant to be,” he said.

It is on the hill of the plateau (高原) in Gwent Bolivar Venezuela (委内瑞拉玻利瓦尔州的圭亚那高原) and it’s among the forest. It is the longest waterfall in the world. It is about 979.6 meters from the top to the bottom. The water goes down to the bottom from the top of the hill directly. The height is about 18 times than Niagara Waterfall. The trees in this place are very strong, so the forest is also very thick. So people can’t get to the bottom of this waterfall on foot. You can go there by boat during the rain season. At other time of year, you only can watch them in the sky.

The third one is Iguassu Fal ls (伊瓜苏瀑布), the widest waterfall in the world. It is about 2,700 meters wide. It’s also the home of many endangered animals in the world. There are many enormous otters (水獭) and anteaters (食蚁兽) there.
