Step1 we will start our class with a quiz.
1) What are the three longest freshwater rivers in the world?
1. The River Nile in Africa
2. The Amazon River in South America
3. The Yangtze River in China
And then introduce the Yangtze River by pictures and questions/answers in ppt. If the students are not familiar with the answers, show them)
How many provinces does it runs across? (It runs across nine provinces.)
How long is The Yangtze River? (It is 6, 300 kilometers long.)
Where is the source of the river? (It starts from the Tuotuo River in the Kunlun Mountain and flows into the East China Sea.)
What is the most famous natural scenery? (3 Gorges)
What is the most famous man made project? (Three Gorges Dam)
Then present some beautiful scenery of the Yangtze River and let students feel that “We are proud of the great river! We enjoy its beautiful sceneries!”
BUT... Show some pictiures of serious pollution in the river to shock students, ask them what is wrong with the river?

Present some questions to lead the students in their reading.
Why have the environmental problems of the Yangtze River raised concern both nationally and internationally?
Rapid agricultural and industrial development plus huge population growth result in the amount of water taken from the river rising, but the waste being put back into the river has also been increasing.
What does the Green River organization do?
It educates and advises people on the importance of protecting the Yangtze River. It also watches the river and stops the illegal hunting of animals.
